The Leaked SBD Tracks Project

(originally posted 1/15/11)

Hey all,

I just finished up a project I've been working on for a while.

A while back I thought it could be cool to take all Shapiro's From The Archives broadcasts, nix all the parts with Kevin chatting away, and make a playlist from the rest of the "exclusive" tracks that can't be found elsewhere.  Then I started finding a bunch of other miscellaneous SBD leaks, like that "Past Summer Compilation" that was offered with show ticket purchases last year, and a link i found that had a bunch of random SBD tracks from various years that surfaced in late 2008 / early 2009.

I thought it would be great to not only have all of those tracks in one place, but to order them chronologically instead of by which FTA (or other leaked batch) they were from.  So that's what I've done.  I've made sure none of these tracks have been released officially, were not fillers or bonus discs associated with any LivePhish / Dry Goods release, are not already available in full-show SBD form on etree (at roughly the same generation), and are the highest bit-rate versions available.  All tracks have been ID-tagged and will be in the correct chronological order when you drop them into iTunes or any other program.  Each file is embedded with a comment that tells you which FTA (or other location) the file came from.

Some of the tracks were only available as 128 kbps mp3 - please let me know if higher bit rate versions exist so i can update the playlist.  Many of them are v0 or 320 kbps, and all are mp3.  I have FLACs of the Bonnaroo FTAs and could up those when I get a chance, but they are on etree as well.  I decided to make this playlist all mp3 for compatibility's sake.

For the sake of maintaining the utmost quality I have only included FTA material from the pre-FM filesets.  I had the pre-FMs for The Went, Lemonwheel, and Bonnaroo '09 broadcasts.  If anyone has pre-FMs from any of the other festival FTAs (that you KNOW are pre-FM by way of the .txt file from etree or elsewhere), please let me know.  The etree database entry says the Big Cypress FTA is part FM and part pre-FM, but i could not discern which tracks are which and there was not an obvious difference in sound, so i did not include anything from that broadcast.  And I know there are more tracks from 12.31.99 that have surfaced in SBD but the ones i've heard are either horribly slow in pitch (Crosseyed) or are cut halfway through, so i've only included the ones from the FTA broadcasts (which sound great).

The idea is for this to be a constantly evolving playlist / collection, so as more FTAs happen and more random SBD tracks are leaked, they can be plugged into the chronological list and i can upload a updated version.

Note that there were some older tracks from the FTAs that sounded a bit better than the versions in etree's database but are clearly AUDs, so i did not include them.  I also included some tracks from older shows that are already available as SDB on etree, but only as higher tape generations with more hiss, less dynamic range, etc.

In addition to the main compilation, i've also created a separate compilation ("Tier 2") of the lower quality FM and web rips of other leaked exclusive SBDs.  As with the main compilation, the comment fields within the actual files will tell where each track came from.  The track listing for the bonus comp can be found at the bottom of this post.

(5/23/11 note):  I've had a couple folks mention that the playlist would have a smoother, more polished feel if the tracks were crossfaded and not as abrupt, as well as applying normalization so there wouldn't be such drastic volume differences from track to track.  Since my goal was simply to provide an organized batch of un-altered files, I feel such tweaks make more sense to be done on the user end upon playback.  If I re-process them with crossfades, you may not prefer the length of my crossfades, and then the files are permanently altered.  Also normalization doesn't always work properly - sometimes the levels spike too high and result in clipping or distortion.  Almost any media player or software can crossfade on the fly.  I have a Droid and the PowerAmp app kicks ass (free trial, $5 or $6 to buy), and you can set it to crossfade any tracks that are not in a gapless format already.  Bottom line, this isn't really supposed to be a DJ-style playlist or jamfest, but more of an aggregation of all the random leaked SBDs out there so you can easily locate your music.

MAIN COMPILATION:   (most recently updated on 11/1/11)

v0 mp3

*regarding 11/1/11 update: These are the new additions to the project.  Please note that tracks that were already available as roughly the same quality SBD (usually the only difference is volume but it's the same exact recording) are not included here.

*please see the long list below for all tracks other than the new additions.  I didn't feel like inserting them all in order, sorry

-from Live Bait 5:
5/28/89 Antelope
6/16/90 Lawn Boy and Possum
7/20/91 Flat Fee and Bowie (w/ GCH)

7/18/99 Jim and Free
12/30/99 Mike's Groove

notes - the Antelope was already available as a SBD but the pitch was way slow.
- Divided Sky was avail on what was purportedly a SBD but this new source makes it obvious that
was not a SBD but just a really nice AUD

8/6/96 Curtain, Tweezer
6/11/94 SOAM
8/20/93 It's Ice, Wedge

"Tier 2" BONUS COMPILATION (click for Megaupload link)

Demonoid torrent (sorry, i have no invite codes)

*as of 11/1/11 - the following new additions are from the Superball FTA broadcast.  These are the best sounding web rips I tracked down for this broadcast (big thanks to fenningenarius).  The levels are all over the map from day to day, and the overall sound quality varies from outstanding (Drowned>R&R, Cavern, Tube, Ya Mar) to not so great (Hood>Bag, the 7/5/94 tracks, 8/5/96 which is a tad hot).  Feel free to toss any of these tracks in with your main compilation and edit the tags so they fall in order.  I just wanted to keep the true "master quality" stuff separate from web rips, FM rips etc.

source: 128kbps mp3 stream > streamripper (no decoding/encoding) > 128kbps single file mp3 > mp3splt-gtk (no decoding/encoding) > 128kbps individual mp3 tracks at same quality/encoding as original livephish stream

6/29/00 Drowned > R&R
5/26/11 Waves check
8/17/97 Wolfman's > Simple > Odd Couple Theme
7/3/94 Antelope > Suzy
12/30/95 Hood > Bag
11/6/98 SOAM (higher bitrate than previous version, much cleaner sounding)
7/5/94 Gin, Lifeboy
6/8/11 Funky B > "Old Zealand" check
11/30/97 Stash, Free
8/5/96 2001 > DWD > Ice
7/18/99 Wilson > Catapult > Smoke on the Water > Icculus
12/13/97 Ya Mar
7/4/99 FEFY
7/21/98 Tube
6/14/97 Cavern

*note - Contact and BBFCFM from 7/14/91 were on this broadcast but were already available in higher quality as a whole show

-the following tracks were added to the 5/23/11 update and are in addition to the original list at the bottom:  Rift 7/5/94, Reba > Yerushalayim... 7/8/94, Izabella 12/6/97

-Shapiro banter has been removed from end of Swing Low Sweet Chariot 11/16/94, beginning and end of Fluffhead 2/23/97, and end of Cities 7/31/98 (for some reason, after I reprocessed these files something bizarre happened - in your tracklist the files will show a rediculously long time, like 86 minutes for the Cities.  Rest assured, the files are not that large and there is no silence after the music ends.  Not sure what happened there).

-track ordering has been corrected for 11/26/94 Halley's > Bowie, 12/29/95 The Real Gin, and for 2/17/97 Soul Shakedown now comes prior to the DWD party, which is the correct order.  These should not have been issues on media players that go by track number but would be issues on players that go by filename.

Fantastic work. Thank you!

Is anyone else having problems with the additional tracks link? It keeps failing every time I download it, all the others work fine thou. Thanks Kenny!

Kenny Powers said...

sorry about the link issues - i hate Megaupload and will be re-upping the whole shebang tonight with a different file sharing service...

This is fucking great! Yes! Thank you.

this is incredible. thanks for all the hard work that went into this!

There was an incredible version of Stash they were playing on the Phish radio station during the afternoon on the first day of Fest 8. It sounded like a 99 or 00 Stash, possibly a 98 Stash. I say this because I think it had that digital delay loop that Trey started using alot during that time. If you could find this Stash for me, I would be forever grateful!

Thanks for the awesome compilation!

Kenny Powers said...

you mean the 10/10/99 Stash that's listed above as part of the Tier 2 comp?

david and mary grace said...

Is the 7-23-97 Ghost from a SBD copy? If so, do you have the entire show?

Kenny Powers said...

Afraid not. Nothing on these compilations is from a show that is available in its entirety on SBD.

Unfortunately, quality-wise that 7/23/97 Ghost is probably the worst-sounding track on that compilation. not terrible but not up to typical SBD standards….it’s like the track was recorded with the levels way too high. i’m thinking the best AUD for that show probably sounds better than that Ghost SBD.

oh well, “you can’t have everything. where would you put it?”

Anonymous said...

Amazing work. Thank you, phan!

Anonymous said...

Is there a reason for the 11/23/97 Gin not being on this comp?

Kenny Powers said...

that Gin is part of the Indio day 1 FTA, which along with day 2 sounds terrible.

david and mary grace said...

Do you have any other tracks from that show from the same source (and what is the source info, btw)?

I agree, the Schoeps CMC641 source that I listen to has a wider soundscape and is a bit "warmer", however, even though it's not top-notch SBD quality, I like the cleanness of the version you have here. It looks like a couple of spikes kept the rest of the track at lower levels.

Until I stumbled across this, I had no idea that any portion of this show was floating around from the SBD. It was one of my favorite shows and that Ghost is fun to listen to, even almost 14 years later! :)

Kenny Powers said...

i'm confused...are you still talking about the 7/23/97 Ghost? that's a SBD, albeit a crappy one, and i don't think there are any other tracks from that show in SBD.

Andrew said...

Thanks a ton KP, look forward to seeing you in the lots!

awesome. just pure awesome. mixed with a little great. thanks.

7/23/97 Ghost...their phinest moment.

Heyy Kenny thanks a lot this is a great compilation! But there was two songs missing when i downloaded it. I'm missing the 1991-7-12 Moose the Mooche and 1995-6-26 DwD > Free. Do you know what's wrong?

Kenny Powers said...

Moose the Mooch I removed right after first posting the links because its part of a LP release. You must be looking at an old track list. No idea why the DWD - Free would be missing!

JD said...

Kenny, any way of sending you an email? I have a few previously unreleased SBD tracks from Kevin that you may want.

Brian said...

how about the Melt from Madison 98'?

Mat said...

This is fantastic!

One thing I came across in looking through the setlists is that Harry Hood/Helpless listed as being from 10/18/98 actually was from 10/17. Just a heads up :)

Kenny Powers said...

Oh snap, thanks for the heads-up! Will make that minor correction on the next revision

Kenny Powers said...

Random thought re: 2/17/97 on Tier 2.

It's wierd how much better Soul Shakedown sounds quality-wise than the DWD suit. A straight SBD sound, whereas the DWD orgy sounds like a SBD/AUD matrix. one would assume it's a SBD because why would Shapiro play a '97 AUD on a From The Archives broadcast. i'm sure part of it is radio frequency degradation but they def sound like two totally different sources. personally i enjoy the lossless AUD's sound better than the DWD party in this FM rip, but the Soul Shakedown is real crispy and warm.

thanks so much for this, mang. its really an awesome comp.

Hi Kenny,

The Megaupload link for the Main Compilation, PT 2 has a message that reads: "The file you are trying to access is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."

Kenny Powers said...

hmm, that's odd. not sure why, i haven't changed anything. Megaupload can be strange sometimes so i'd give it some time and try again later. Also, i should be updating the whole project soon to include the exclusive stuff from Live Bait 5 and the Superball FTA. was waiting to see if we'd get some pre-FMs for that but i'm thinking we might not...

Anonymous said...

hey... so the megaupload link for part 2 isnt working.

Otherwise, thanks man! Keep up the holy work!
