Virginia Beach Amphitheater: 7.21.97
Phish.net show page
Monday, 07/21/1997 Virginia Beach Amphitheater, Virginia Beach, VA
Soundcheck: Limb By Limb, Twist (several times), Ginseng Sullivan
Set 1: Ghost, Dogs Stole Things, Piper, Dirt, Ginseng Sullivan, Bathtub Gin, Character Zero
Set 2: Wolfman's Brother -> Magilla, David Bowie, Wading in the Velvet Sea, Theme From the Bottom -> Jam, Funky Bitch], Slave to the Traffic Light
Encore: Loving Cup
Notes: The jam during Bathtub Gin featured Trey jumping up and down in time with a syncopated jam, as well as strong Drowned teases. Near the end of the jam, Trey mentioned how good it was to be back home and named the four newer songs that were played. The beginning of Bowie included a Birdland jam and Wolfman’s included a Bathtub Gin tease. The jam out of Theme, as well as Funky Bitch, featured LeRoi Moore on saxophone. The jam with LeRoi included a segment where he played two saxes, Trey played three guitars, Mike played two basses and the Cracklin’ Rosie cymbals, Fish had four drumsticks and Page was lying across his keyboards playing as many as possible.

This has been requested a couple times, so here ya' go! It was a better than average source (Schoeps cmc641, one of only 2 sources on etree surprisingly), but as is often the case I felt it could use a little more high end to being out the clarity of the music. The bass was a bit strong initially so I scaled the low end down a tad. Finally, the levels were quite low so I brought them up a few db's.
Enjoy!

Sick show and sounds great....this was the first summer I went on "tour"...I did this show and the next two, plus starlake thru the Went...
..I'm a part of a small minority that thinks the summer '97 was better than fall '97. Summer had just a little more funk.
Nonetheless, this show was and still is hot...c'mon the first set could challenge any second set from the post conventry years.
just checked out your blog Eric - amazing photos!
I kinda forgot i started a blog...it's pretty sad right now.
Love the remasters...I been to about half these shows and its nice to hear cleaned up copies.....had the pleasure of being at the Boise and Chula Vista '99 shows.
wow, lucky you for being at Boise! i was abroad in Ghana for all of fall and Dec '99 tours so it's been fun going back and listening to the shows that took place during my alternate reality, or something.
glad you like the remasters.
This one really sounds great, the Ghost from this show (the first American version) is still one of my personal favorites. Really the whole first set is one of my favorite sets I've seen. This was also my first time "on tour" as I did this show, Atlanta, Raleigh, The two in Texas then a couple of weeks later headed to Deer Creek. Good times. As for summer '97 being better than fall, I'll take either. Those are easily my two favorite tours to listen to.
