The blog has been lacking a 1993 show to this point, so here you go. There are so many classic '93 shows from later in the year that pretty much everyone is familiar with (and also have SBDs already), so I thought I would highlight a selection that some may have missed. This was the show that directly followed the Crest Gamehendge, so it is understandably overshadowed. According to The Pharmer's Almanac, only 686 of 1,400 seats were filled at what has since been renamed The Wells Fargo Center For The Arts (does that place look like it should have a corporate name attached?). Those in attendance, though, were a respectful bunch, as evidenced by how quiet the chatter is in the more delicate moments like Page's solo in Foam.
While the set list might not include any breakouts, and fans of fluid, segue-filled second sets with a half dozen songs or less may not love this show, in my opinion even a below-average 1993 Phish show is still pretty damn hot. And that's not to say this show is below average - the Split is short but rip-roaring and the playing is super tight all-around. Trey's tone is sick, with that signature early-mid '90s machine gun solo style, and the overall mix coming from Paul at the board sounds great. I felt the Fishman tune and the sophomoric "Prison Joke" sequence dragged on too long, but what can you do...1993 saw tons of Phishy antics and this show was no exception. Don't miss the end of the YEM vocal jam..."SHUT UP!!!"
In terms of the recording, this FOB schoeps cmc54 beauty falls under the category of sources that didn't really need a remaster, but certainly doesn't suffer from one since the taper's recording levels were low and I felt it could've used a jolt of low and high end. Mike was somewhat hard to hear so I bumped up the frequencies where his bass roams.
Hope you enjoy.
